भारत

Chanakya is a legacy font family, popular with newspapers, magazines, printing presses and desktop publishing. Your file stores ordinary letters and symbols, and the font draws Devanagari shapes over them. When the font is missing, as on most phones, in emails, on websites and in Google Docs, you only see what is stored underneath.

Unicode stores the real Devanagari characters instead. The text looks the same on every device, can be searched, and can be copied anywhere.

Chanakya, Kruti Dev and Unicode compared

Chanakya, Kruti Dev and DevLys are all legacy fonts, but each one maps characters in its own way. Text from one font will come out wrong if you run it through another font's converter. Check the font name in your source file first. If it says Kruti Dev, use the Kruti Dev to Unicode converter. If it says DevLys, use the DevLys to Unicode converter.

Where Chanakya text usually comes from

  • Newspaper and magazine layouts made in PageMaker, CorelDraw or InDesign
  • Files received from a printing press or DTP operator
  • Old Word documents, articles and archives typed in Chanakya
  • Publishing and typing work done before Unicode became common

Tips for better results

  • Copy the text straight from the source file. Text inside scanned pages or screenshots cannot be pasted and needs OCR first.
  • Chanakya has regular and bold versions. Convert headings and body text the same way.
  • After converting, pick a Unicode Hindi font such as Mangal or Noto Sans Devanagari in Word.
  • Read the result once, especially half letters, conjuncts and numbers in long articles.
  • If the result looks wrong, check whether the original font is Kruti Dev or DevLys and use that converter.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Chanakya font?

Chanakya is a legacy Hindi font family, including Walkman Chanakya, widely used in newspapers, magazines, printing presses and desktop publishing. The file stores ordinary letters and symbols, and the font draws Devanagari shapes on screen, so the text only looks like Hindi when the font is installed.

Chanakya ko Unicode mein kaise convert karein?

Paste your Chanakya text in the left box, click Convert to Unicode, then copy the Hindi text from the right box. The result is standard Unicode, so it works in Word, Google Docs, WhatsApp, email and websites.

Is Chanakya the same as Kruti Dev or DevLys?

No. They are separate legacy fonts with different character mappings, so a Kruti Dev or DevLys converter will give wrong output for Chanakya text. Use the converter that matches your font.

Newspaper ya press file ka text copy karne par ulta-seedha kyun dikhta hai?

Press and design files often use Chanakya. Phones and apps do not have the font, so they show the letters and symbols stored underneath instead of Hindi. Converting the text to Unicode fixes this because Unicode stores real Devanagari characters.

Does this work for Walkman Chanakya?

Yes. Walkman Chanakya belongs to the Chanakya family. If your text still looks wrong after converting, check the exact font name in the source file.

Which font should I use after converting to Unicode?

Any Unicode Hindi font works. Mangal is the default on Windows, and Noto Sans Devanagari is a good choice on Android, Mac and the web.

Is this converter free, and is my text safe?

It is free and needs no sign-up. The conversion runs in your browser, so your text is not uploaded or stored.

Can I convert Unicode back to Chanakya?

Yes. Use the Unicode to Chanakya converter to turn Mangal or other Unicode Hindi text into Chanakya.
